7000 SriLankan Airlines retirement scheme due to low income

The government is preparing to introduce a voluntary retirement scheme for nearly 7000 employees of Sri Lankan Airlines, the national carrier of Sri Lanka.

The government has identified declining revenue as a problem due to the company’s declining operations in the face of the Kovid virus. As a result, the Ministry of Tourism estimates that it will take about three years for the airline to return to its pre-2019 status. Accordingly, redundancies will be reduced by introducing a voluntary retirement scheme.

It has been decided to submit a proposal based on the recommendations of the committee appointed to study the implementation of this pension scheme.

The Ministry of Tourism has estimated that approximately 560 employees will retire from the voluntary retirement scheme under this scheme. Accordingly, it is estimated that it will cost 1.5 billion rupees to pay compensation and arrears to employees who wish to retire.
